Setting Up Your Home Nursery

Setting up a home nursery in anticipation of the arrival of your little one is an exciting and rewarding experience for soon-to-be parents. It’s a space where you’ll spend plenty of time nurturing and caring for your little one, and you might even get them to sleep occasionally as well.

You’ll want to plan your nursery carefully and give thoughtful consideration to ensuring it is both comfortable and functional. In this guide, we will take you through how to create a beautiful and practical home nursery that will cater to your baby’s needs and reflect your personal style.

Selecting the Perfect Location

Begin by selecting a suitable location for your home nursery. There probably won’t be lots of rooms you’re trying to choose from, but if you have got a choice of a couple of rooms, you Ideally should choose a room close to your bedroom to make nighttime feedings and comforting easier.

You should also consider factors such as natural light, noise levels, and where the room is in the overall house (for example, a room might be generally quiet but if it’s over a kitchen or utility room these can be noisy at certain times). Ensure the room has adequate space for essential furniture like a crib, changing table, and storage units.

Designing the Layout

Once you have chosen the room, design the layout of your home nursery. Think about where you place furniture carefully so that you maximise space utilisation. Position the crib away from windows and blinds to avoid direct sunlight and noise from the outside. If you can, place the changing table near where you’ll be storing nappies (you might be able to store some of these on the changing table itself) and clothes as this will make changes easier. Allocate a cosy corner for feeding and cuddling, with a comfortable chair and a side table for essentials like muslin cloths and bottles.

Choosing a Colour Scheme

The colour scheme you choose will impact the ambiance of your home nursery. Opt for soothing and calming colours like soft pastels or neutrals, which will promote relaxation and contribute to a peaceful environment for your baby. Some people like to go for traditional blue or pink, whilst grey can be a good neutral colour. Greens can create a soothing, natural feeling space whilst yellow can give a sunshiny feel and brighten things up if a room is a bit starved for natural light.

It can be fun to consider incorporating some accent colours that make the space a bit more fun and inject a bit of personality, such as wall stencils or stickers, or mobiles which as well as being fun for mums and dads are also great stimulation for babies.

Essential Furniture and Equipment

You’ll need to invest in some pieces of essential furniture and equipment that will make your home nursery functional and comfortable. These items include a sturdy crib or bassinet, a comfortable changing table, a dresser or storage unit for organising clothes and supplies, and a comfortable chair for feeding. Ensure that all furniture meets safety standards (it’s a good idea to attach furniture to the wall so that as your baby begins to walk and explore they don’t pull heavy furniture down on themselves – cordless blinds or blinds with a cord guard are also a good idea).

Soft Furnishings and Decor

Add a touch of warmth and personality to your home nursery with soft furnishings and decor. Choose blackout curtains or blinds to create a sleep-friendly environment. Invest in a high-quality crib mattress and soft bedding – again make sure that it adheres to safety guidelines. Soft rugs or carpets create a cosy and comfortable play area for your baby – though it’s a good idea to make sure they’re stain resistant or machine washable.

Finishing Touches

Once you’ve got the room decorated and got all of the large furniture items in there, it’s time to add a few finishing touches. A white noise machine is a great way to make the room even more soothing and make it more likely that your baby will get a good night’s sleep. A safety gate over the door can be a good addition for when your baby is a bit older and is starting to crawl around the room and explore.

Setting up a home nursery is an exciting and creative process and often something that parents are really excited to get started with. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can create a cosy and functional space that caters to your baby’s needs while reflecting your personal style!
