Whether it’s by breast, bottle, or both, there are no “right” ways to feed your baby, however, if you’ve decided that you want to give breastfeeding a try, then being prepared can make it all the more enjoyable.
Whether you’re preparing before baby arrives, or you’re already in the thick of it, (keep going, you’re doing great!) there are some breastfeeding tools that can really work with you to give you the best breastfeeding journey possible…
In this guide, we’ll explore what these breastfeeding essentials are, and give you some helpful pointers on all of them. No fluff or surplus stuff. Just tried and tested breastfeeding aides the mums at Munchkin swear by…
A word from Munchkin’s Lactation Specialist, Kerry Baker (Registered Midwife and Lactation Consultant, International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE)):
Preparing for breastfeeding is a key to success. This involves education on how to get breastfeeding off to a great start, understanding the foundations of latch and attachment, what are normal baby behaviours, and what good milk intake looks and feels like for you and your baby, and where to get support.
We know that in the early postpartum period, women rightly want to relax at home and bond with their baby and not have to worry about going out to get things that they need. In many cases women need nothing more than themselves and their baby when it comes to breastfeeding. However, there may be some other precious items that helped you through those early weeks, and it’s nice to understand what some of those helping aids may be to have at hand so you can focus on this special time at home with your baby.
Why having breastfeeding essentials matter to new mums
Let’s be honest, breastfeeding isn’t always the picture-perfect experience you see on Insta. Some days, you’re battling sore nipples; others, you’re second-guessing your milk supply and wondering why something so natural can feel so tough.
This is exactly why breastfeeding essentials are like the biggest bear hug when you need it most. In fact, research from Mother & Baby found that 78% of breastfeeding mothers experienced improved comfort when using properly fitted nursing bras, breast pumps, and nipple shields.
Essential breastfeeding preparation also means you’re ready for the unexpected. Maybe your little one has trouble latching at first, or you need to start pumping earlier than planned. Having your support aids ready means you can adapt to whatever your feeding journey throws at you.
The NHS also recommends learning about breastfeeding before your baby arrives, (but don’t panic – if your little one is already here, now’s a great time to be reading this!) Exploring important topics like positioning, latching, and expressing milk can really boost your confidence once feeding begins and equip you to handle common challenges as they arise.
Antenatal classes cover these topics, but you can also get advice from your midwife, family, and local support groups – many offer drop-ins for pregnant women wanting to know more. When you’ve got your breastfeeding essentials ready, you’re setting yourself up for the best possible start.
The ultimate breastfeeding essentials checklist
Building your breastfeeding essentials list is like creating a personalised support system. Every item serves a purpose, and together, they help you feel more confident, comfortable, and prepared.
-
- Nursing bras
Invest in well supportive bras throughout pregnancy. Nursing bras with easy-access clips and breathable fabrics are a must for comfort and convenience. Avoid wired bras and get measured for these after 36 weeks pregnant in readiness for your baby’s arrival. - Breast pads
Wardrobe saviours in those early weeks. Stock up on both disposable and reusable options – you’ll be amazed by how many you go through. As a smart alternative to breast pads, you might consider our milk collector cups that sit discreetly inside your nursing bra and passively capture every letdown and leak – genius! - Nipple creams
Lanolin creams or organic balms can be a lifesaver if you’re dealing with soreness or cracked skin. Keep some on hand before you need it. - Nursing pillows
Far from a luxury – they help with proper positioning and reduce back and shoulder strain during longer feeds. - Breast pump
Breast pumps, whether manual or electric, can be really helpful if you need support with your supply or if the baby isn’t latching and getting enough milk whilst breastfeeding is being corrected. Double, hospital grade electric pumps are recommended for this and are suitable to use 48 hours after delivery. Prior to this, hand expressing is the appropriate method to remove breastmilk.

Munchkin’s Flow
Unlike any other product in the world of breastfeeding essentials, Flow is a clinically tested nipple shield available in four sizes that features a unique see-through milk channel that lets you actually see milk flowing during feeds. For many new mums, one of the biggest worries is not knowing if baby is getting enough milk. Munchkin’s Flow helps take the guesswork out of feeding by providing visible confirmation that milk is flowing – offering reassurance exactly when it’s needed most. You can see how it works in this quick demonstration video.
Breast massager
Sometimes, breastfeeding can get a little on the uncomfortable side, and many women experience clogged ducts or painful engorgement, which can occasionally lead to a temporary condition called mastitis. Gently massaging your breasts can alleviate these symptoms, alternatively, a breast massager can do a soothing job, such as the warm touch lactation massager we have here at Munchkin.
And don’t forget nappies!
Not strictly a breastfeeding essential – but closely connected! In the early weeks, feeds and nappy changes go hand in hand. Keep a good supply nearby to make those round-the-clock routines smoother and less stressful. For more information on how many to stock up on, check out our ‘How many nappies do newborns need’ guide.
